Scope of the project

We were contacted by a young couple to design their primary bathroom and to take a look at their closet situation.

We were asked to transform this 80s master bath which had a dysfunctional layout – with standard tile floor, cherry wood cabinetry, dark granite counter cabinet, unused jacuzzi and a small angled corner shower pan.

This tight bathroom was outdated and no longer serves its purpose.

In its place, the couple wanted to create a sanctuary within their home where they could wake up and be energised in and also relax in before resting at night.

They were inspired by the various hotels and spas in their travels and were open to modern details using natural materials.

Contemporary bathroom featuring a freestanding bath with floor-mounted taps
A clean-lined floor-mounted tub-pourer complements the curvaceous bath.

We wanted to create a space that is dark and moody yet still calm and inviting, a place of refuge.

The focus of the design is to invite nature in through the tall glass window.

Light oak vertical wood slats draw your eyes to the open slanted ceiling.

The shower is carved into the room creating its own niche, cave like yet feels completely open to the garden view.

The space feels light & uplifting yet grounded through the square slate floor.

The floating stone vanity is juxtaposed by a small glowing pendant that helps balance the space yet keeps it symmetrical.

An organic dark coloured, egg-like freestanding tub for two is placed where our homeowners can relax & appreciate the view.

The shower is carved into the room complete with dark finishes and various textures, creating its own niche/cave – yet it still feels completely open to the beautiful view.

Standout features

  • Wood slats wall finish
  • Shower cove imbedded into the room
  • Large window blurring the indoor and outdoor experience
  • Luxurious double shower
  • Organic shape freestanding tub in front of window
  • Long tall mirror illusion using medicine cabinets for extra storage

One focus of the design was to invite nature in through the wall-sized picture window.

Biggest challenge addressed

The biggest challenge for this project was the layout and how to deal with the slanted tall ceiling.

The new design of the primary bath removed a wall and combined a walk-in closet with the existing bathroom.

The result is a highly functional space that houses a large two-person shower, a freestanding tub, two sink-floating vanity complete with a makeup section, and a smart toilet.

This bathroom sanctuary is an elegant yet decadent oasis for its young professional couple.
