From the designer:
This commission involved the creation of a contemporary ensuite that aligns with the traditional aspects of the owner’s home.
The objective was to design a functional space with increased storage, a larger shower, and a separate toilet room while keeping warm, neutral tones that resonate with the Mid-century modern era.
Project Challenges:
The primary challenge was to transform an outdated and dysfunctional ensuite, which was cramped and contained a large built-in corner spa that consumed significant space and was never used. Additionally, the enclosed shower was small, the storage options were basic, and the basin was inadequate.
Design Solution:
The design solution combines the minimalism of contemporary design with the Mid-century modern features the owners requested. The result is an elegant and contemporary functional space that flows seamlessly by using warm neutral tones and subtle curves in the cabinetry, lighting, and free-standing bath.
Custom-designed walnut cabinetry adds depth and grounds the spaces, while bronze hardware complements the cabinetry, tiles, and lighting. Stone-look porcelain tiles with mitred exposed edges extend from floor to ceiling, making the space feel more expansive.
The custom-designed vanity is the centrepiece of the space and is based on Mid-century modern features with subtle curved edges. The vanity has seamless drawer fronts with a finger pull finished with an organic white Caesarstone benchtop, paired with custom mirrored cabinetry recessed into the wall.
The design features a symmetrically mirrored cabinet on each side with a centrepiece for the Mona brass feature light. The ensuite was made more spacious by removing the toilet door and wall above the doorframe, enabling the tiling from the bathroom to run seamlessly into the toilet enclosure.
A bronze reeded frameless glass screen door maintains privacy while still allowing light to flow through. Two niches were installed, one within the open shower and the second above the free-standing bath.
An in-wall cistern toilet was used within the toilet enclosure, which gained 600mm in space, improving the design and aesthetics of the space and facilitating ease of cleaning.
The design transformed the outdated and underutilised ensuite into a functional and elegant contemporary space that flows seamlessly. The result is a beautifully renovated ensuite that evokes warmth and relaxation from the moment you enter.
