The owners were building their dream home on the shores of Cape Palliser in the Wairarapa – the site located in the Wharekauhau Country Estate.
German Kitchens took on the challenge to create a timeless, yet elegant bathroom for the home, one that displays a level of sophistication and interest.
The owners’ love for natural materials allowed them to push the boundaries on textural and aesthetic design with deep patterned porcelain, unique quartzite and timber veneer doors.
The results are stand out, both in terms of the desired aesthetic and the required functionality.
Our homeowners requested a large walk-in shower and a bath for the main bathroom which would be used by all who wanted a bath.
Other asks included a double vanity, good storage and plenty of space.
I set about designing the required space for the large walk-in shower and utilised the alcove by the door.
This allowed us to create a separate area for the bath.
Free-standing tubs are the trend currently but, as we have found, they can be hard to clean around and, if you don’t get the spacing correct, they can also look lost in larger bathrooms.
However, I wanted to create a statement piece for the bath and searched for a large drop in version as this would allow for more of a presence – particularly if we designed a platform / pedestal to elevate the bath on.
The Bette One Highline Bath was selected as this allowed for the tiled pedestal to be constructed to drop the bath into.
This is the look I wanted to achieve – one that resonates sophistication and elegance.
Once the design and final layout were confirmed, we set about working on the material selection and chose a vivid and patterned porcelain tile to warm the space.
We decided to flood the bathroom with the same tile on the walls and floor to create a unique ambience and we softened the impact with the large glazed white steel bath and matching toilet.
The vanity was chosen in a rustic timber veneer to complement the warm tones and this was capped of with a hand-picked slab of Patagonia Quartzite for the vanity top, which worked perfectly with the chosen tile.
Finally, the room was completed with a simple illuminated wall mirror which serves to reflect the tile and further enhance its presence in the the bathroom.
