Design concept
This double-storey interwar bungalow has been given a contemporary refresh, with a focus on creating a clean, cohesive interior that supports modern family living.
While the home’s architectural form remains, the interiors have been reimagined through new flooring, custom joinery, and a refined material palette.
The bathrooms have been designed as elegant extensions of the home’s heritage character, delivering a refined balance between classic charm and modern functionality.
Both the master ensuite and main bathroom celebrate a cohesive palette, tailored detailing, and purposeful spatial planning – responding to the contemporary needs of a family while respecting the architectural character.
Context
Tucked in a leafy pocket of Melbourne’s inner suburbs, this double-storey interwar bungalow has been thoughtfully reimagined to meet the demands of modern family living.
Positioned within a streetscape of established period homes, the residence held a strong architectural presence, yet its interiors had lacked cohesion, flow, and a connection to contemporary life.
The renovation embraced the opportunity to modernise without erasing character, giving the home a clean, confident refresh that balances warmth with restraint.
The refreshed interiors pay quiet tribute to the home’s architectural roots through form, proportion, and thoughtful materiality.
A palette of layered textures, custom joinery, and refined finishes creates a home that feels grounded yet unmistakably current.
Design solution
Master ensuite
The master ensuite showcases a sophisticated palette, where moody charcoal finger tiles, large-format stone benchtops, and considered lighting work together to create depth and tonal richness.
A double vanity with navy shaker cabinetry is paired with arched mirrors and brushed brass fixtures – refined details that nod to traditional craftsmanship while embracing a contemporary aesthetic.
Main bathroom
In contrast, the main bathroom presents a lighter, more family-oriented environment.
The introduction of a skylight brings much-needed natural light and ventilation.
A crisp palette of white subway tiles, patterned flooring, and the continued use of navy joinery and brass accents ensures visual continuity while creating a bright, uplifting atmosphere.
Outcome
The result is a pair of highly resolved spaces that are visually connected yet individually defined.
