From the designer:

The setting

  • A family of five – mum, dad and three teenage boys
  • Family home nestled in the rural country hills
  • Earthy lodge aesthetic, timber and schist stone accents throughout the home

Scope of project

The renovation involves a separate toilet and bathroom utilised as a guest bathroom and the main shower/bathroom for the boys.

Glossy tiles with a mossy, stone-like texture cover the feature walls, bringing a modern and organic atmosphere.
A gloss tile reminiscent of stone/moss was applied to feature walls for a modern, earthy aesthetic.

Owner requests

  • Combine toilet/bathroom into one space – lose the bath
  • A functional space for three teenage boys
  • A warm, modern twist on a rustic, earthy aesthetic
  • To be on view from the kitchen (when the door opens) – did not want to see the toilet
  • Include a display for ornaments
  • Towel storage
  • Two basins and a large shower
  • Keep existing windows
  • Deal with a very high angled 4-5m stud height
A bold timber vanity paired with gun metal vessel basins and tapware offers a strong, masculine presence against textured feature tiles.
The timber vanity is substantial and masculine while gun metal vessel basins/tapware contrast and complement the feature tiles behind.

Response

Walls and timber ceilings were removed to combine both spaces, and proportionately lowered to 2.7 flat.

The layout was reconfigured for functionality.

The natural porcelain floor tile was continued through from the kitchen for consistency/warmth, and applied to two walls.

A gloss tile reminiscent of stone/moss was applied to feature walls for a modern, earthy aesthetic.

Now dark stained timber cabinetry combines display and towel storage upon entering – this continues to form the privacy screen to the toilet in the shape of fins spaced evenly apart, not to enclose.

The timber vanity is substantial and masculine, connecting with the cabinetry opposite.

Bold gun metal vessel basins/tapware sit beautifully against the tiles.

A large shower has plenty of standing space, with recesses for soaps/shampoos.

A moody elegance is created with lighting in the cabinetry and space.
