Situated within the original Federation footprint of a home in Randwick, NSW, this guest bathroom forms part of a broader renovation and extension that carefully negotiates the relationship between heritage architecture and contemporary living.

Located adjacent to the home’s guest bedroom, the bathroom was required to function as a full guest amenity while maintaining the elegance and presence of a powder room.

Accommodating a shower without it dominating

The design challenge was to accommodate a shower without allowing it to dominate the experience of the space.

A large vanity wall mirror adds to the sense of space while bouncing light through the room.

The solution became the room’s defining feature: a custom fluted glass enclosure framed in nickel.

More than a shower screen, it acts as an architectural screening element, obscuring views into the shower and allowing the bathroom to be read as a calm, unified volume,” says Tammy Miconi, Lot 1 Design.

The enclosure references traditional metalwork while expressing the angular geometry that underpins the project’s design language.

Guided by the overarching concept – Frame and Angles – the bathroom reinterprets elements of the original Federation home through a contemporary lens.

What anchors the room?

A monolithic vanity crafted from honed Zalvano Marble anchors the room, while brushed Swiss brass tapware introduces warmth and refinement against a restrained palette of stone, plaster and glass.

Rather than replicating heritage detailing, the design draws on its underlying principles of craftsmanship, proportion and permanence.

The result is a bathroom that feels both familiar and distinctly contemporary — a highly resolved space that establishes a respectful dialogue between old and new.
