Rain showers have become a popular pick for modern bathrooms. They feel luxurious, look stunning, and offer a calming experience that turns a quick rinse into a daily ritual. But there’s one concern many renovators share: how much water are they actually using?
Jennifer Price, Strategic Brands Manager for Plumbing World, says today’s rain showers aren’t the water guzzlers people assume. Many rain showers on the market these days only use around nine litres of water per minute. That’s similar to many regular shower heads, which typically sit between nine and twelve litres per minute depending on the model and rating.
The main difference is how the water is delivered. Rain showers provide a wider, gentler flow that mimics rainfall, while traditional heads tend to have a more focused, high-pressure spray. Both can be efficient, but rain heads rely on good pressure and smart design to avoid feeling weak.
Water efficiency is measured by star ratings, and most quality showers now sit at three or four stars. A well-rated rain shower will give you the same indulgent feel without the waste. That said, there are still higher-flow options out there, so it’s worth checking the specifications before you commit.
If you’re trying to reduce water and energy bills, a low-flow rain shower paired with a timer can help keep usage in check. Some households also install dual-function showers, where a standard hand-held shower sits alongside the rain head, allowing more flexibility for different users.
It’s also worth thinking about pressure. Most water-efficient rain showers are designed for mains pressure systems. If you have low pressure, talk to your plumber or consultant to make sure you’re getting the right setup for good performance.
With the right product, you can enjoy that spa-like feel without the guilt. Water-wise doesn’t have to mean boring.
