Ventilation might not be the most glamorous part of your bathroom, but it’s one of the most important. Without proper airflow, moisture builds up quickly, leading to mould, mildew and damage to your finishes. Even in a brand-new space.

Jennifer Price, Strategic Brands Manager for Plumbing World, says many people don’t think about ventilation until it becomes a problem. “Ventilation is important, as well as care,” she says. That care includes simple habits like wiping down the shower after use, and removing water droplets from your tapware.

The goal of ventilation is simple. Get the moisture out, fast. A good extractor fan should be powerful enough to clear steam after showers and prevent it from settling on walls, mirrors and ceilings. Placement is key too. Fans work best when positioned close to the shower or bath, where most of the moisture is generated.

Windows can help, but they’re not a substitute for a fan. On cold or damp days, most people won’t leave a window open long enough to clear the room properly. That’s where a reliable extraction system becomes essential. Not just for comfort but for the longevity of your renovation.

Good ventilation protects your finishes, prevents health issues from mould, and saves you hours of cleaning over time. It’s not the most exciting part of your project, but it’s one you’ll be glad you got right.
