Selling a home can feel like something you should be able to manage on your own. But experienced agent Derek von Sturmer has seen how that mindset can create problems. When sellers go it alone, or rush into the process with the wrong help, they often find themselves stuck, stressed, and second-guessing every step.
“What you need to do is build a relationship,” Derek says. “And think of the relationship with a real estate agent as a lifetime relationship. It’s not just a transactional relationship.”
You can’t afford the wrong fit
Derek believes your agent should feel like someone you trust from the start. “You need to walk away from that meeting with the agent… thinking, hey, look, this guy can actually take care of us.” That confidence helps everything move more smoothly, because when you trust the person guiding you, decisions become easier.
“You’re going to see them more than you see anyone and speak to them on a daily basis. So you have to like them”.
Letting go doesn’t mean losing control
It’s natural to want oversight when you’re selling something so valuable. But Derek says the real turning point is when sellers feel they can delegate and know things are being done properly. “If you can’t do that, then you shouldn’t be working with them.” With the right help, sellers can feel more in control of the big picture, instead of getting lost in the details.
Life’s already full, selling shouldn’t break you
Derek understands the mental load that comes with selling, especially for families. He’s worked with plenty of clients who’ve felt completely overwhelmed, and he’s shaped his approach to ease that strain wherever possible.
He shares how much more he understood after becoming a parent himself: “I remember starting in real estate and dealing with families… one moment they were the best clients ever… and the next minute being completely irrational and upset. It wasn’t until I had children… I get it now.” That empathy drives how he works: not to add pressure, but to lift it.
Real estate isn’t just a business, it’s a relationship
Derek knows the industry has a reputation for being high-pressure or impersonal. But that’s not the kind of real estate he believes in. “Don’t believe what you hear about all agents,” he says. “There’s some really, really good agents out there.” And those agents aren’t there to complicate things. “People are just overcomplicating real estate… it’s a really simple business. It’s a relationship business.”
