As avid entertainers, the owners of this home requested a large open kitchen with clear sight lines to the gardens and rural setting beyond.
They wanted a kitchen that would incorporate an aesthetic in-keeping with the cues of their pavilion home influenced by architect Sir Miles Warren.
It was imperative to complement the forms and materials explored throughout the traditional architecture of Sir Miles’ quintessential houses of the 1960s.
Situated at the end of a large living and dining pavilion, the kitchen needed to have a strong presence and be well grounded with its layout and detail.
The design is set out in an L-shape format, providing the backbone to the overall result, and allowing a strong connection to the outdoor spaces beyond.
A distinctive feature of the design is the rear central cook zone with its dual underbench ovens and flush hobs – reflecting a contemporary version of the freestanding range from a bygone era.
Concealed ventilation in an architectural bulkhead above ensures clean sight lines from the large window format. This sets the stage of the kitchen space, framed by the prep and storage elements adjacent.
The working pantry zone houses hidden appliances including dual fridges, all integrated to reinforce the refined detailing.
Flanked on the opposite side is key entertaining serving and crockery storage.
The large central island provides a wash and prep zone, as well as storage facilities for everyday crockery and tableware.
A careful mix of selected finishes were specified including natural and engineered bench tops, liquid metal negative, and stained oak timber flooring in a striking herringbone pattern.
Fully integrated appliances contribute to the overall elegance and refinement of the design.
Soft matte painted and veneer-stained joinery is the finishing touch to this detailing. Applied to reflect the form and detail of the architecture, it provides a modern twist on the traditional panelled door, with the use of a hidden handle detail within the frame.
Further attention to detail can be seen in the entertainment and bar area, flowing on from the core kitchen zone.
A change in the joinery detailing with the application of box frame doors and woven brass metal inlay deliberately reinforces furniture-like detail rather than a built-in approach.
Lighting was kept simple and understated to ensure the kitchen connected with the sight lines of the main living room and outdoor areas beyond.
Hanging pendants were not installed in the kitchen, but used above the formal dining room table, to reinforce the hierarchy of function and to create intimacy within the volume of space.
The final result is a kitchen that is unified within the surrounding large modern pavilion space. It is an overall showpiece with eye-catching detail and optimal functionality.
The design is an elegant and tailored approach, respecting the details and playing on the architect’s cues to deliver a home that reflects and enhances the client’s contemporary rural lifestyle.
