Design brief

The planning for this project started three years ago, when my professional homeowners came to me with the architectural plans for their new build, on a cliff top, in Campbells Bay.

With construction well underway, they needed help realising their dream kitchen and scullery and other bespoke cabinetry in this Hamptons inspired home.

I was given a designated space to plan, design and build a kitchen and scullery.

  • They wanted to re-create their kitchen they had in Australia and talked emotively about traditional panelled doors, crisscross glass cabinets and post details.
  • More efficient food storage and larger preparation areas were important.
  • A scullery that replicates the kitchen for food preparation and storage.
  • Seating for three people in the kitchen, even though only two people live in the home permanently – children and grandchildren visit from time to time.
  • My homeowners insisted on white cabinets.

Pendant lighting over the island extends the classic Hamptons vibe. At the same time, the glass-fronted cabinets are internally lit to showcase these traditional elements.

Design statement

Working closely with the architect and builder was paramount as the building evolved and grew into an intricate work of art.

The wall panelling and dado heights had to be taken into consideration as well as the ceiling details and oversized architraves.

We had to agree that the working triangle would be interrupted due to the architect’s placement of walls for the fridge/freezer, also the balance of the island in relation to the back wall would be compromised due to the positioning of these walls adjacent to the scullery.

The kitchen is centre stage to the dining and living areas and flows out into exterior decking and the breath-taking views.

So, an elegant, traditional feel was created using detailed mouldings, double beaded doors and glass inserts that are mimicked throughout the home.

Modern kitchen featuring white cabinetry, a breakfast bar, and glass display cabinets. scullery also features.
Classic cabinetry detailing continues beyond the kitchen – the scullery is seen at rear.

To gain extra storage I used the traditional posts, either side of the freestanding oven, as pull-out pantries for essential cooking food storage, including a bottle store.

The scullery housed a second sink and dishwasher for when entertaining, as well as being the main food storage area.

Due to my homeowner’s love of colourful nick-knacks which she wanted displayed throughout the home, we kept everything in one colour, using very formal design with strong lines and detailing to bring it to life.

Resene Black White is everywhere, including the cabinetry, benchtops, and freestanding oven.

While modern appliances are integrated, everything from the tapware to butler’s sink further the classic look – as seen here in the scullery.

This Hamptons style kitchen is bright, light, fresh and airy with a coastal vibe that makes you feel warm from the moment you walk in.

It’s spacious with generous proportions, almost holiday home-like, and has nautically inspired personal homewares everywhere you look.

The space very quickly became the hub of the seven bedroom home.

Most importantly was having a seamless flow of design elements from the kitchen space through the rest of the home, which we achieved by our attention to every detail in all the spaces we created.
