We were engaged on this project to do a full house interior joinery fit-out design and specification, with the kitchen being a central element.

Owner’s kitchen wish list

  • Monochromatic cool toned grey palette
  • Strong lineal element
  • Minimalist aesthetic
  • Functional use to be key to layout choices
  • Additional cooking, cleaning and prep area to scullery
  • A beverage area included but not be a feature
  • Large format tiles to all flooring within house
Contemporary tapware and an inset sink keep the kitchen island clean-lined and clutter free.

Design response – texture and dimension

We worked to create layers through texture to give interest and create dimension.

The vision at the start was to create a desaturated scheme that would derive its interest through light play across surfaces, and structural pattern of materials.

This was achieved through integrated appliances to limit their visual contribution and to rework the wall set out to allow pocket doors to give concealment to the scullery.

Hob area

I chose to offset the hob area to give a quirky appeal to the back wall.

The battened bulkhead was not an easy feat to achieve, with the batten returning to the underside into the wall.

The lineal element was reaffirmed with the crackle glazed finger tile.

To bring relief to this lineal aspect I chose a veined stone with strong structural pattern to break it up.

Colour choices create cohesion while negative rail handles keep the minimal aesthetic.

In the scullery, there is a steel framed drinks area with bar fridge below and storage.

Island

The island was given waterfall ends to create visual weight to balance the back wall design, and the lineal element is repeated in the seating area of the island.

Lighting has been included across this project within cabinetry to allow the light play of the lineal elements and to bring both task and ambient lighting to the space as a whole.

Looking through open pocket doors to the scullery with finger tile splashback and open storage shelving.

Scullery

In the scullery, we have a steel framed drinks area with bar fridge below and storage for things of that type.

The drinks area’s relaxed look does not represent the technical input required to get this to work, with extensive work undertaken at framing stage to reconcile fixing points and power etc.

Second sink, oven and dishwasher give plenty of space for when they entertain.

The use of the pocket doors allows both space to be open when they choose and closed off when they want.
