From the designer:

Originally a stable/barn on a homestead property located just south of Berry, NSW, this building was reimagined into a self-contained guest house for family and friends, with a particular focus on creating a highly functional and delightful kitchen.

The challenge was to work within the existing structure, preserving its external character, while transforming the interior to meet the needs of modern living.

Our design responds to the brief by blending contemporary country aesthetics with a minimalist and efficient layout.

The kitchen is positioned and designed to provide a connection with the surrounding natural environment – it is located to overlook the outdoor garden, ensuring the act of cooking remains in harmony with the tranquil landscape.

The cabinetry is designed for maximum storage while having the appearance of a piece of furniture – creating another rustic accent.

A seamless integration of full-height fridge, appliance storage, and pantry along the rear wall adds to the sense of spaciousness, mimicking the appearance of a standalone joinery unit, while maintaining a clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

We preserved the original hardwood flooring to help retain the rustic charm of the barn.

The flooring is juxtaposed with contemporary elements, such as the painted veneer cabinetry, custom neutral-toned concrete benchtop, and moulded butler’s sink.

Materials were chosen for their natural textures, contributing to the warmth and inviting atmosphere of the space.

Accents of raw and bronzed brass, seen in the tapware and shelving, add an elegant touch that will evolve well with time.

The freestanding island bench, with its hand-made ceramic glazed tiles, painted timber, and raw brass-capped shelving, acts as both a functional workspace and an architectural focal point.

The carefully chosen materials and colours – soft warm browns, aging brass, and earthy greens – are inspired by the surrounding landscape, enhancing the connection between the interior and the outdoors.

Emphasising practicality and lightness, the kitchen layout is compact yet highly functional, with all necessary appliances seamlessly integrated.

Traditional joinery elements, such as the retractable cupboard doors, conceal essential kitchen appliances, maintaining a clutter-free environment.

The moulded butler’s sink, cast as a single unit within the benchtop, further embodies the concept of contemporary country by marrying tradition with modernity.

Barn is as barn does – well not quite. The external barn vibe is retained but indoors it's all about balanced good looks and functionality.

This kitchen exemplifies a refined approach to design, focusing on efficiency, materiality, and an atmosphere of understated luxury.

With an open yet compact design, it fulfils the needs of a small space while ensuring that the overall interior remains light, airy, and a joy for the homeowners’ guests to experience.

Owner: We are delighted by the functionality and beauty of the kitchen – the warm colours and blend of textures evoke a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere while working well in the space.
