Kitchen
Dramatic stone island, countertops, and backsplash provide a great contrast to the otherwise simple lines and cabinet materials in this open kitchen design.

Sliding door panels pocket into the wall creating a direct connection to the outdoor terrace and city views beyond.

The open feeling and functional layout of appliances and work space make this a dream kitchen for avid home chefs and family gatherings.

Warm wood and cool stone – a marriage made in kitchen design heaven.

Trends asked designer Richard Landry for more about this impressive kitchen and bar.

1. Where in the house is the kitchen positioned?
On the Main Level, view side of the house away from the street.

2. What are the spaces that it connects with?
The kitchen is open to a family room/TV area and adjacent to the dining room.

3. Does the kitchen design include a butlers/scullery? If so, where is it positioned?
There is a service pantry that is behind the kitchen and next to the dining room.

4. This looks like a large-sized kitchen – what are its dimensions, including the length of the island?
The kitchen is approx. 5.8m x 6.7m. The island is 4.9m long x 1.2m wide.

5. What are the challenges of designing a kitchen of this size, and how were they overcome in this case?
Kitchen circulation and appliance layout to create a good working triangle are always important considerations.

In this case, the primary cooking is between the island and the back wall with under-counter refrigerators, storage drawers, and ample prep area to allow for 2 cooks to work without guests being in the way.

Guests always hang out in the kitchen!

In case the resident bar tender is busy, a television is centrally placed within the design.

Bar
The wood slat design for this bar creates a warm and intimate feeling in this bright and airy lower recreation room.

Bar equipment and appliances, as well as much-needed storage, are concealed below the bar and behind the slatted wall for a clean elegant look.

1. Where in the house is the bar positioned?
Lower level recreation room.

2. What are the spaces that it connects with?
Open to a larger recreation room space and TV area. Adjacent to the dedicated home theatre space.

3. Can you tell us a bit about the design of the wine storage?
The wine storage has a combination of display shelves and deeper case storage.

Part of this space was reclaimed crawl space under the concrete deck and pool structure above.

The sculptural bar and wine storage facility is a head-turning feature in the cavernous relaxation space.
