Awarded Environmental Project of the Year, with Gold in Environmental / Revegetation at the Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025. Located in the Maitai Valley, Nelson. By Kūmānu Environmental.

The storms in August 2022 severely eroded the banks of the Mahitahi River and Groom Creek, leading to significant weed overgrowth in the valley. In response, Kūmānu Environmental successfully diverted the river using eight pumps, relocated approximately 1,000 fish and various invertebrates, removed 7,000 cubic meters of gravel, installed 2,500 tonnes of rock, and planted 75,000 native species.

The planting strategy was based on the local soil profiles and the plant species that thrived prior to European colonization, utilizing the excavated silt as a substrate and selecting species that can thrive without the need for irrigation. A new footbridge and restored walking tracks have improved access for the community. The judges noted that this initiative has enhanced local ecosystems and revitalized essential habitat types.
