When you think about designing a new kitchen, it’s easy to picture the big elements first: the benchtop, the cabinetry finish, maybe even a scullery. But it’s often the smaller, less obvious features that end up having the greatest impact on how the space feels day to day. Dave Wilson from Mastercraft Kitchens has seen it countless times. Homeowners may not realise what’s possible until a designer shows them, and suddenly the kitchen takes on a whole new level of practicality.
One example is the dreaded corner cupboard. For years, these spaces have been dark, awkward storage zones where pots and pans disappear into the back, never to be seen again. Now, clever engineering has solved the problem. “There are what’s called Lemans units that turn,” Dave explained. “Basically it’s a turntable that the stuff in the back corner comes to the front.” A simple change like that means no more crawling into cupboards. Everything you need is right at your fingertips.
Soft-close drawers and cupboards are another quiet revolution. Once a luxury add-on, they’re now considered standard, and for good reason. They stop the banging of drawers, keep cabinetry protected, and bring a sense of calm to the kitchen. Dave likens it to the shift from manual window winders to electric windows in cars. Once you’ve experienced the ease, you’d never go back.
Lighting is another feature that makes a huge difference, though it often gets overlooked in the excitement of choosing colours and layouts. Modern task lighting under shelves and cupboards turns meal prep from a chore into something enjoyable, especially at night. It also doubles as subtle ambient lighting, making the kitchen a welcoming space long after cooking is done.
Technology is also creeping into the smallest details. Electronic opening cupboards, for example, may not be something you think of when first planning a kitchen, but for people who love clean, handle-free designs, they’re a game changer. A gentle press and the cupboard opens smoothly, combining style and function in one neat touch.
What all of these features have in common is that they’re easy to miss if you’ve been living with an older kitchen. They’re not the showpieces you’d spot in glossy photos, but they transform the way a space is used. The genius of good kitchen design lies in these details, where clever solutions quietly support the way you live.
The next time you’re planning a kitchen, don’t just focus on the big-ticket items. Ask your designer to show you the innovations that sit behind the doors and drawers. These hidden features might not be the first things your guests notice, but you’ll appreciate them every single day.
