Josh Marshall from Marshall Plumbers has seen first-hand how small plumbing issues turn into big, costly problems. A simple inspection once or twice a year can pick up the small issues before they turn into big ones. Here are his top tips for giving your home a quick plumbing health check.

1. Start at the water meter

Josh recommends beginning where the water enters your property. Check the meter and supply pipe for corrosion, damp soil, or pooling water. If the meter moves when no taps are on, that’s a sure sign of a hidden leak.

2. Check under the house

If you have underfloor access, this is one of the best places to spot trouble early. Josh suggests using a torch to look for drips, damp soil, or marks on timber. A faint hissing sound can also reveal a steady leak you might otherwise miss.

3. Inspect ceilings and roof cavities

Plumbing that runs overhead is prone to leaks and bursts caused by expansion and contraction. Lift insulation in the roof space and look for staining or sagging. Pipes should be properly supported, not left hanging loose.

4. Assess your hot water system

Hot water cylinders typically last around 20 years. Josh advises looking for rust, discolouration, or dampness at the base. Occasional dripping from the overflow pipe is normal, but constant leaking or water pooling inside is a warning to call a plumber.

5. Look at wastewater and drains

Drainage issues are often overlooked until they smell. Josh recommends checking for slow drains, odours, or flies near sinks. Under cupboards, make sure pipes slope downwards. Outside, soggy or smelly patches in the lawn can signal broken sewer lines.
