Our homeowners wanted a home with a strong sense of coastal sophistication from this Hauraki Gulf residence.
They desired an ambiguity of location that expressed their collective travel experiences – an international flavour balanced with an innate feeling of personal character and relatability, essentially the opposite of flamboyance.
We wove these essential elements through our design language to create an elevated ensuite space that responded to the natural beauty visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass window.
Every aspect of the design and specification was chosen to complement and anchor the interior spaces to the natural panorama, blending with its palette and textures – framing its beauty and creating a real sense that this bathroom space is a sophisticated extension of nature.
The ensuite interacts with its outside environment readily yet by drawing a full wall of delicate sheer drapes it is possible to instantly deliver a sense of privacy and intimacy.
Design detailing that leans into a more global design language was incorporated to align with our homeowner’s international background.
Floor-to-ceiling travertine tile and Spanish ridged subway tiles imitate the patterns in the sandy shore at low tide.
A crafted organically shaped mirror cabinet paired with warm wooden lighting beads hint at soft sea creature forms.
The natural patina of Plumbline’s living finish tapware, ages gracefully, ensuring every element of the design has a biophilic reason for its inclusion.
The ensuite’s full-frontal exposure to the beach and openness to the adjoining master bedroom, made the incorporation of absolutely private areas essential to the spatial design.
A smokey oak door behind the complementary toned vanity slides away to reveal a private toilet space.
The hidden glass-free shower area boasting both a rain head and shower slide creates the possibility for secretive two person showering.
Replacing the traditional bathtub with a Stoked hot tub in this home’s master ensuite added an unexpected feature and definite personal character to the bathroom space, while feeling at home in the wider architectural envelope.
The design creates a bathroom that isn’t specifically New Zealand in character, but rather one that could be found on various international beach front locations – only the views confirm this home is found on our own sandy shores.
Our design team’s implementation of a strong biophilic design ethic through distinctly crafted, artisan detailing and features, elevates this project from a high-end coastal bathroom to a soulful architectural space.
