Quality design sees a modest townhouse space maximised with this impactful Poggenphol kitchen – that the homeowners were repeat customers says it all

Renovated kitchen with Carrara marble flooring and open layout.

This kitchen was part of a large renovation that included removing walls and replacing the dated marble floor tiles with new large format slabs of 20mm thick Carrara marble.

The owners had a modern country style in mind with timber elements and a matt black theme.

Designer: “The island needs to be large and clad in stone” was our brief for the main kitchen island.

The island has a staggering capacity of seating for ten (not all breakfast stools shown here).

A wall of white and contemporary slender benchtops are only half the story of this high-tech kitchen with hero distressed surfaces.

Maximised storage with island drawers and tall cabinetry.

The only way to maximise the storage was to have back-to-back units on the island, plinth drawers in the toekick spaces and also to go up – hence the use of the full height cabinetry along the back wall.

Split cabinetry zones offer purposeful storage.

Alongside the kitchen, Lara Farmilo of Poggenpohl Studio also designed the laundry upstairs and wine cellar below, keeping the continuity flowing throughout this townhouse.

The long +Segmento island, with its storage on the outside and its waterfalled marble benchtop at either end, makes the sleek kitchen appear bigger than the available space would actually allow.

Sleek hob and extractor complement marble and white cabinetry.

The induction hob is as sleek as the integrated extractor above – it's the marble surfaces set against the crisp white cabinetry that draws the visitor's eye.

The proportions of the townhouse kept the scale of the kitchen modest – but that's not how it looks.

Timber-clad 'cloud' mirrors the kitchen island below, with recessed lighting for a soft glow.

To help emphasise the island, the designer mirrored the island shape to the ceiling with a suspended ‘cloud’, clad in timber panelling. Recessed LED strip lighting has been used on the inside of the cloud.

Cooking on the island is uninterrupted thanks to a hidden Neff downdraft.

The use of the in-bench Neff downdraft meant that cooking on the island was possible without the distraction of an overhead rangehood.
