Paradise is best enjoyed with company, but a little privacy shouldn’t be underestimated.
This home on Waiheke Island serves up two single-storey pods linked – but also separated – by a beautifully designed courtyard and pool area.
The outdoor zone connects to the main pod’s large open-plan kitchen/dining/living area where extensive moving glass walls frame mesmerising sea views.
Atlantic48 cavity Ranchstacker doors, from Altus, were the doors of choice as they provided the strength and weather performance requirements for a home exposed to the changing sea breeze.
They also allowed for wide openings with their ability to have panels weighing up to a quarter of a tonne.
But the fact that they can be discreetly hidden away into a pocket cavity within the exterior wall, means that when it comes time to entertain the home can really be opened up to create a social, open-plan pavilion.
The living space flows to a covered deck for lounging, lunching or both.
Its louvred roof maximises use year-round.
Screens and planting maintain privacy from neighbours without compromising the view.
With bifold doors eliminating a whole wall, occupants can even soak up the sight of the sea from the comfort of the master suite’s bed or bathroom.
Clad in black cedar and hardwoods, this home shadows back into its surroundings, appearing modest, while being anything but.
It’s little wonder that it took out the Registered Master Builders 2017 House of the Year – Auckland/Northland: Local Supreme Winner.
