For many people, the idea of designing a home from scratch sounds exciting. Until they realise how many decisions are involved. That’s why a good process makes all the difference.
Jarrod Angrove of Landmark Homes says design doesn’t start with technical drawings, “it starts with a blank piece of paper with a section shape drawn on it, some topographical lines and a conversation.”
You don’t need all the answers
One of the biggest myths about building is that you need to show up with a clear vision. In reality, the process is designed to help you figure it out. Some people arrive with magazine clippings. Others bring Pinterest boards or just a few things they know they like or don’t like.
“We’re the professionals who come to work alongside you,” Jarrod explains. That means asking the right questions, listening carefully, and helping couples (sometimes with very different priorities) find common ground.
From idea to design
The process begins by understanding how you live. What do you love about your current home? What’s not working? What matters most day to day? From there, an architect will create an initial concept that brings together your site, your lifestyle, and your wishlist.
It’s not about getting it perfect on the first try. Often, the best results come from collaboration and refinement. And because the same team stays with you throughout the process, nothing gets lost in translation.
The role of the interior designer
Once the layout is locked in, it’s time to focus on the details. This is where Landmark’s in-house interior designer, Shannon Pepper, steps in. She helps clients make everything from flooring and paint choices to full kitchen and bathroom layouts.
Some people want guidance and reassurance. Others would rather have options presented to them and simply choose what feels right. Either way, the process is tailored to match your style, with enough support to keep decisions clear and manageable.
Selections are often made in a dedicated room at the office, where samples of tiles, taps, and finishes are ready to compare. There’s even a big screen to look at layouts together. It’s designed to feel collaborative, not overwhelming.
A home that feels like yours
Designing a home isn’t just about creating a beautiful space. It’s about making a space that feels right for the people living in it. That means thinking about how you’ll move through it, where you’ll gather, and how it needs to function day to day.
Whether you arrive with a Pinterest board or nothing at all, a good design process helps you discover what you really want. And when it works, the end result is more than just a house. It’s a home that feels like you.
