Cupboards were once standard in every kitchen. But if you’ve ever crouched down to reach something at the back of one, you’ll know they’re far from ideal. According to Ross from Poggenpohl, the future of kitchen storage is all about drawers. And it’s not just a trend.

“Nothing under the benchtop is a cupboard… everything is drawers,” says Ross. Pull-outs give you full visibility and access, so you’re not digging through piles or shifting items around. You can see everything at once, and nothing gets lost at the back.

This change isn’t just about convenience. It’s a total rethink of how kitchen storage should work. What used to be awkward or wasted areas, especially in corners, can now be fitted with smart systems that slide or swing out. One clever example is the Le Mans corner unit, which curves out from the cabinet like a racetrack and brings its contents with it.

Much of this thinking comes from European design principles, where limited space has led to innovation. Deep drawers, soft-close runners, and full-extension hardware aren’t just nice to have. They make a kitchen easier to use and much more enjoyable to live with.

Ross from Poggenpohl points out that while Kiwi kitchens tend to be more spacious than European ones, the design philosophy is shifting in the same direction. Every centimetre should earn its keep. Drawers are simply more effective at doing that.

You don’t need a brand new kitchen to benefit from this approach. Even a partial upgrade, replacing key cupboards with drawers or adding internal pull-outs, can dramatically improve how your space functions.

The best kitchens don’t just look great. They work hard. They make life easier, keep things tidy, and help you enjoy the space more. Switching from cupboards to drawers is one of the simplest ways to level up your layout.
