From the architect:

This was a new build masquerading as a restored Mt Vic beauty.

Council town planning rules dictated that the original 1890s exterior form and cladding were replicated.

However, within we envisaged a relaxed, colourful, and contemporary home.

The kitchen is centrally placed, with access to the lounge, verandah, courtyard and garden.

T&G paneling on the island echoes vintage style, refreshed with contemporary colours and form.
The island’s T&G facing links it with the ceiling and walls – vintage materiality, revisited with contemporary colours and form.

The homeowners are a busy, outdoor-focused couple who wanted a casual organic island bench made from Tasmanian blackwood.

The island has curved hangout spaces at each end, one for seating and one for standing, while the T&G facing links the island with the ceiling and walls—vintage materiality revisited with contemporary colours and form.

A stainless cooking and refreshment area feels part of the courtyard space. It allows guests to relax outside and chat to the hosts while the latter prepare a meal.

Kitchen enjoys views of a walled cooks garden and downtown Wellington beyond.
The kitchen looks out to the walled cook’s garden and views over downtown Wellington.

Adjacent to this, the storage cabinets are also finished in pale veneer ply with black appliance, lighting strip and handle accents.

With the owners having lived for years in a farmhouse, this kitchen and adjacent living areas re-imagine the open, friendly and casual pleasure in sharing time, home-cooked food and a cuppa with friends.

All while appreciating the walled cook’s garden and views over downtown Wellington.
