Client brief
This kitchen design was the first step towards a family villa undergoing a complete renovation.
I was engaged early on to redesign the kitchen within the existing 17-year-old space.
The only structural change was removing the wall separating the laundry from the kitchen to allow for a walk-in scullery.
The scullery was to be the more practical space, concealed behind sliding doors, while the kitchen was to be the showpiece.
My homeowners wanted a modern, minimalist ‘architectural’ look with warm materials and tones.
They loved the look of marble and wanted a marble sink to be a feature on the island.
The island was to be treated more like a piece of furniture than a kitchen, with seating at one end.
Many of the appliances had already been purchased.
Soon after the new kitchen was designed, an architect was engaged to update the back-end of the house, which included improving the skylight above the kitchen and consistent ceiling levels throughout the kitchen and living room.
Designer’s response
The beauty of natural stone certainly makes the required statement on the island, with cantilevered seating at one end balanced by a heavy stone block (with integrated sink) at the other, while all appearing to hover delicately above the floor on just four, fine black-metal posts.
To continue the drama, all of the oak cabinetry has mitred corners and is designed to line up with the 3.3m ceiling height.
The expansive width of the kitchen’s back wall is exaggerated by a lack of interruption and minimal detail.
