From the designer:
The owners’ vision for their ensuite renovation was to create a harmonious design marrying artisan pieces from their travels into their everyday space.
They desired a large shower, ample storage, and the integration of Mexican mosaic tiles that they had acquired during their time abroad – creating a sanctuary where they could unwind and rejuvenate.
The narrow space proved challenging in more ways than one, with the window alteration hindered by a need to stay within council regulations.
To compromise, we transformed the high, narrow window into a full-height opening to bring in more natural light, adjusting the walls to accommodate an in-wall toilet cistern and creating decorative niches for the mosaic Mexican tiles.
A level-entry shower, a custom-designed vanity with a handmade basin, and a full-height wall-hung storage unit were incorporated for added functionality.
Lighting was paramount in creating an illusion of space within the 5.9m² room, and in highlighting the Mexican tiles which were the owners’ key design priority.
This was achieved by using LED strip lighting in wet areas and the ceiling.
Selecting a large mirror with LED lighting around its perimeter added depth, while LED strip lighting along the walls and ceiling added movement and flow to the area.
We used textured tiles with a tactile concrete effect to emphasise the statement tiles while utilising warm tones in the vanity colours to soften the room.
Large-format patterned floor tiles in the shower create the illusion of space.
A dark colour on the pitched ceiling enhances the intimate atmosphere, with a custom-designed ventilation system seamlessly blended into the ceiling.
As this property was a renovation and not a new build, maintaining the integrity of the original concrete slab foundations was essential.
However, this proved challenging when designing the shower system – a pre-moulded base allowed for seamless tile installation without compromising style.
Overall, the ensuite renovation successfully incorporated the owners’ vision, by maximising natural light and showcasing their feature hand-selected Mexican tiles, marrying functionality with style.
The completed room is a harmonious space that bestows a touch of international flair into the everyday.
