Gold, Commercial Build (Up to $500,000), Landscapes of Distinction Awards 2025. Punakaiki, West Coast. By Kūmānu Environmental.

The Punangairi Visitor Experience Centre serves as the fresh entry point to the Paparoa National Park and the renowned Pancake Rocks. Situated in one of the nation’s most difficult construction sites, Kūmānu Environmental has crafted a landscape that honors the unique materials of the West Coast, importing resources while reducing truck traffic and collaborating with local contractors.

Vibrant nikau and native plantings indigenous to the area, extensive areas of exposed aggregate concrete, and distinctive timber barriers distinguish this project. Intricate raki paving, featuring chevrons precisely angled at 52 degrees, carries the cultural significance and narrates the stories of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae, who jointly manage the centre with the Department of Conservation as a partner. This landscape is designed to endure the harsh coastal conditions.
