Design brief
The owners, a couple who frequently host guests, desired a luxurious and modern main bathroom.
The design was to incorporate various types of lighting to create different moods, ensuring a versatile and sophisticated ambiance.
Key elements were to include a spacious shower, a freestanding bathtub, and a double vanity.
Design goals
- Luxury and modern aesthetic – utilise high-end materials and sleek design elements to evoke opulence and modernity.
- Versatile lighting – implement ambient, task, accent, and decorative lighting, with smart, dimmable systems for mood customisation.
A niche with LED-lit shelves adds both functionality and a touch of elegance.
Meeting the brief
To meet the owners’ desire for a luxurious and modern main bathroom, I created a space featuring a freestanding bathtub elevated on a step with integrated lighting for a dramatic effect.
A niche with LED-lit shelves adds both functionality and a touch of elegance.
A full-height mirror enhances the sense of space, making the room feel more expansive.
Gunmetal finishes were chosen to create a moody, luxurious atmosphere, complementing the overall aesthetic.
Two types of tiles, dark and light, were used to add depth and visual interest to the bathroom, providing a sophisticated contrast.
Challenges overcome
The primary challenge was integrating various lighting types to create different moods while maintaining a cohesive design.
This was achieved by strategically placing ambient, task, accent, and decorative lighting, all controllable via a smart system for easy customisation.
Another challenge was maximising the sense of space without compromising on luxury.
The inclusion of a full-height mirror and elevated bathtub on a lit step helped to visually enlarge the space and add a touch of drama.
Involvement
My role encompassed the entire design process, including concept development, material and finish selection, lighting design, and overseeing the installation to ensure every detail met the owners’ expectations.
I became involved at the project’s inception, allowing me to have significant influence over the design direction and ensure that the owners’ vision was realised from start to finish.
Note on lighting
The niche behind the bath contains two types of lighting – LED strip lighting and a long tube-like light fitting.
The latter is projecting light from the back of the tube to light up the niche, and can be operated independently of the strip lighting.
The niche LED strip lighting works together with the LED lighting beneath the bath plinth.
