The owners were after a kitchen for their first home, situated in a new coastal subdivision on the outskirts of Auckland – so the concept needed to reflect the light, bright and beachy surroundings.

The long island with two benchtops while the scullery entrance is to the rear.

Recessed pulls keep the look clean and avoid protruding handles that might snag on the busy chef's clothes.

Elevated southern glazing above the cabinetry ensured the kitchen, living, scullery and laundry were bathed in light without excessive overheating.

The kitchen's tones, stools included, connect with the sea and bush views beyond the windows.

Stained larch on the island storage cupboards providing a cohesive link with larch used on other interior and exterior walls.

Situated at the end of a large living and dining pavilion, the kitchen needed to have a strong presence and be well grounded with its layout and detail.

The centrepiece of this kitchen is its island, providing to-hand-space-saving functionality and visual impact.

The working pantry zone houses hidden appliances including dual fridges, all integrated to reinforce the refined detailing. This changes in the entertainment and bar section of the cabinetry, for which the box frame doors and woven brass metal inlay deliberately reinforces a furniture-like aesthetic.

The kitchen enjoys spectacular water outlooks.

The engineered oak floor was chosen by the designer.

To celebrate the building’s rich history, articles from circa 1880 were chosen to sit alongside more modern elements, including the restored antique wall clock.

The designer chose to use James Hardie Titan panel painted with Porters Paint to give a rust effect finish.

Two custom sinks are set into the Florim island benchtop provide ideal prep and clean-up facilities.

The warmth of herringbone floors in an oak finish provide an ideal counterpoint to the dark veneer of the tall cabinetry. The structural post was cladded in a pearl mosaic.

Banks of skylights and splashes of coloured glass imbue the interior with ever changing light patterns.

Mesh cabinet door inserts are in keeping with the home's heritage status aesthetic.

The designer: this kitchen is truly a reflection of champagne taste on a shoe string budget.

The original Fletcher cast iron stove has been repaired and restored and is a feature of the kitchen.

The large central island provides a wash and prep zone, as well as storage facilities for everyday crockery and tableware. The flooring is stained oak timber flooring in a striking herringbone pattern.

A 3mm shadow line referenced throughout the kitchen adds a subtle detail to the discerning eye.

A feature woodgrain rangehood box sits seamlessly between tall cabinetry, creating negative space and a sense of lightness.

The porcelain benchtop provides strength and durability – one of the requests of the design brief.

The design is set out in an L-shape format, providing the backbone to the overall result, and allowing a strong connection to the outdoor spaces beyond.

The door between kitchen and dining was widened and the stairs were carefully restored, retaining the hollows in the treads that seem to tell the tales of the past occupants.

The island features a semi-industrial paint finish.

Discreet push to open upper perimeter cabinetry gives way to open display shelving beside the dining area.

A large warehouse was the perfect canvas for the owners to create their new urban retreat/home, including an art studio, generous garage and character kitchen.

Working with the original Federation Queen Anne fabric to restore and celebrate its history, the architect developing this kitchen to also suit modern living.

Wood floors and wood cabinetry bring a natural feel to the dining/kitchen living space that opens to the covered outdoor room with room-height sliders.

With budget and a designer linear look in mind, consideration was given to the clever use of materials and alternative ways to create luxurious details on a shoestring budget

Concealed lighting accentuates the kitchen's various feature materials.

Being a draftsman, the owner’s penchant for clean lines, attention to detail & balance needed to be reflected, while still ensuring the kitchen was a practical space to work in.

The splashback and benchtops pick up the tones of the grey cabinetry.

The design avoids overbearing the space with cabinetry while providing enough storage for the couple and their future plans to on-sell.

Mosaic/kitkat tiles provide a cohesiveness in colour and a subtle repetition of lines and curves, echoing the ripples and movement of the ocean.

The satin nickel Tradco Classic hardware range and English style Falcon oven ideally complement the traditional joinery and country style home.

Touching aesthetic – it may look like this tap has been turned on 10,000 times, but the brass mixer has, of course, an aged finish.

The kitchen occupies a corner of the restructured mid-century industrial warehouse – the architect was given free rein to be bold

The chunky stone island benchtop overhang provides an ideal breakfast bar.

While most of the Cesar cabinetry is handle free, handles are present on the working side of the island.

Natural light falls on a marble-look work surface – the classic/modern kitchen is a pleasure to use.

The reinvented kitchen now has an island with soft curves at both ends.

Sleek, impactful and bursting with functionality, the island also keeps sightlines clear to the ocean outlooks when the pop-up is retracted into the benchtop..

Flush fitting the induction cooktop into the Staron creates a seamless plane across the rear benchtop. The metal rangehood cover is another design feature.

The drinks station can disappear from sight with the close of pocket doors.

The use of a retractable door system allowed for the ovens and the drinking zone to be hidden when not in use.

The rangehood is absorbed into the cabinetry.

The bar area is also tucked into the entertainer's kitchen.

"Classico Ora" cabinetry was turned inside-out to achieve the easy care matte finish required, complementing the refurbished Tawa flooring with all its dings and scrapes.

Seating was retained in the same area as for the old kitchen.

The owners set about modernising, extending and adding spaces, with the new kitchen retaining its status as the heart of the living areas.

Feature light pendant.

To capitalise on the views from the kitchen, the designer removed the servery window, replacing it with a motorised retractable blind, and extending the Staron benchtops from the kitchen sink area through to the servery – thus connecting it to outdoor lifestyle entertaining.

Cornices and panelled cabinetry give the kitchen a traditional accent.

The renovation takes inspiration from the yellow wattle blooming around Perth Hills in the spring, as well as one owner's love for mustards and pinks.
