The warmth of herringbone floors in an oak finish provide an ideal counterpoint to the dark veneer of the tall cabinetry. The structural post was cladded in a pearl mosaic.

The owners were after a kitchen for their first home, situated in a new coastal subdivision on the outskirts of Auckland – so the concept needed to reflect the light, bright and beachy surroundings.

The front door – conscious of the location of north, the designer created a courtyard at the front entry that allows peeks of morning sun into the house.

Mesh cabinet door inserts are in keeping with the home's heritage status aesthetic.

Recessed pulls keep the look clean and avoid protruding handles that might snag on the busy chef's clothes.

The laundry cabinetry echoes the board look-fronted cabinets in the kitchen.

The design is set out in an L-shape format, providing the backbone to the overall result, and allowing a strong connection to the outdoor spaces beyond.

Flush fitting the induction cooktop into the Staron creates a seamless plane across the rear benchtop. The metal rangehood cover is another design feature.

A 3mm shadow line referenced throughout the kitchen adds a subtle detail to the discerning eye.

The original Fletcher cast iron stove has been repaired and restored and is a feature of the kitchen.

To capitalise on the views from the kitchen, the designer removed the servery window, replacing it with a motorised retractable blind, and extending the Staron benchtops from the kitchen sink area through to the servery – thus connecting it to outdoor lifestyle entertaining.

Copper-toned tiles in the scullery connect with the wood-tones of the cabinetry.

Discreet push to open upper perimeter cabinetry gives way to open display shelving beside the dining area.

Wood floors complement both the stone and wood cabinetry finishes.

The 60mm Tasmanian Blackwood top has a seductive heart shape that invites close contact.

Seating was retained in the same area as for the old kitchen.

The designer chose to use James Hardie Titan panel painted with Porters Paint to give a rust effect finish.

The chunky marble-look island is the kitchen's leading feature – enhanced by the skylight structure above it.

"Classico Ora" cabinetry was turned inside-out to achieve the easy care matte finish required, complementing the refurbished Tawa flooring with all its dings and scrapes.

The renovation takes inspiration from the yellow wattle blooming around Perth Hills in the spring, as well as one owner's love for mustards and pinks.

The centrepiece of this kitchen is its island, providing to-hand-space-saving functionality and visual impact.

The island became the centrepiece of the industrial design direction, a unique framed system allowing it to float above the floor.

While most of the Cesar cabinetry is handle free, handles are present on the working side of the island.

The island includes a mitred stone down turn half rebated into the timberland frame and box section.

Situated at the end of a large living and dining pavilion, the kitchen needed to have a strong presence and be well grounded with its layout and detail.

The owners set about modernising, extending and adding spaces, with the new kitchen retaining its status as the heart of the living areas.

Being a draftsman, the owner’s penchant for clean lines, attention to detail & balance needed to be reflected, while still ensuring the kitchen was a practical space to work in.
